Actually, there is one thing I would spend money on; and that's the reason we walked into the store this particular day. I wanted to see, in person, the Ostrich pillow. Because I wanted it. Don't judge me.
Ok, moving on to the sand.
After looking around, and my husband making me massage his back with all those electronic back massagers, we were walking out. Right by the door (those impulse sections will get ya), they had this sand display. The sign had the price of $19.99. My first thoughts were, "Why are they selling sand? Why are they packaging it up....and who actually pays for sand?!" Then, I causally touched it as I walked out.
I was hooked.
My brain couldn't quite register what I was feeling. So, I just kept touching it. It was sand...but it was wet...kinda slimy....but you could mold it....and it wasn't messy whatsoever. My husband was already out the door signing for me to hurry, but I made him come back! When he touched it he said, "let's get some".
For us or the kids? Like it even matters.
98% sand
2% polymer
100% fun
True that! The 2% makes all the difference!
If my kids were playing with this, I wanted to know what polymer was! Polymer is a molecule that's used in anything plastic, putty, rubber, etc. It is non-toxic...but the label says for children over 5. Mine aren't, but I do sit with them to make sure they don't eat it!.
And, to be honest, to make sure they don't destroy our expensive sand :)
So far, it has been a hit! I find myself playing with the kids and loving it. I love that it can be molded, but also is very squishy. Weird stuff. This would be great in a office as stress relief! At first, Norah was a little hesitant of the texture, but now she loves it!
Oh, the best part?!
It. never. dries. out.
I'm the mom who throws away tons of play dough because we can't remember to put the lids back on! We've made a sand sensory bin at home and it was a complete mess. Sand was everywhere. For days. Sticking to my feet. I threw it away. If I'm going to pay $20 for sand I want it to last! Hooray it does! We left it out 2 days (on accident) and it was fine.
There are times when some pieces break off, or fall on you but it's nothing like dealing with real sand. It doesn't have that grimy texture. 99% of it sticks to itself as you clean up and leaves no residue. The tiny leftover pieces are easily cleaned up...not like tiny grains of sand.
So, this was worth it in my book!
